Fishing
A year-round sport fishery, Michigan City, the “Coho Capital
of the World,” offers no less than five great sport fish: coho and chinook
salmon, steelhead, brown and lake trout. Charter

conditions report hotline at (219) 872-0031 ext. 820. Michigan City is also
host to several fishing tournaments that are held in the Spring and Summer.
City Park System

city-operated parks and playgrounds containing a total of 553 acres.
Washington Park is a 118-acre lakefront park including a marina, zoo, museum
and public beaches. Millennium
Riverwalk Plaza located in Washington Park on Trail Creek offers fishing, a
Greek-style theater and fountain. A Sports Complex is currently being built
that will feature softball, baseball and soccer facilities. Other
parks include shaded picnic areas, well-equipped playgrounds, baseball
diamonds and tennis courts.
Gaming
Blue Chip Casino offers six exciting gaming areas including: more than 1325 slot machines, 50
table games including blackjack, craps, roulette and poker. The pavilion also

Both the Indiana Dunes State Park and the Indiana Dunes
National Lakeshore are located within 10 miles of Michigan City.

2,182 acres of historical and amazingly unique Hoosier landscape. The park with its extensive dune areas, is open to beach use with
complete facilities during the summer. Other facilities include camping,
naturalist service, hiking, and special youth programs. |

Indiana Dunes National

15,000-acre park is dedicated to preserving the ecology of the sand dunes. Located within the park is a “moving dune” know as Mt. Baldy
The park is adjacent to Michigan City’s western corporate limits. Facilities
include handicapped facilities, environmental study area, hiking, bike trails,
interpretive trails and an information center. Since the Indiana Dunes National
Lakeshore surrounds the Indiana Dunes State Park, close cooperation exists
between the parks. Several activities are offered by both parks. Cross country
and downhill skiing and snowmobile trails are ample around the Michigan City
area and nearby cities.
Cultural Attractions of the Area
The La Porte County Symphony Orchestra offers spectacular live entertainment throughout the county including Summer Concerts, Pops Concerts, Classic Concerts, Chamber Events and a Children's Concert attended by 8,000 students from Michigan City and the surrounding area. The Festival Players Guild is well-known for their
semi-professional productions at the Mainstreet Theatre under the sponsorship
of the Festival Players Guild. The Dunes Art Foundation presents theatrical
productions during the summer and also children’s theatrical productions.
Footlight Players present their theatrical productions during the
fall-winter-spring season.

Sunday Evening Forum

Michigan City since 1954. Timely topics and famous speakers are the hallmark of
the five programs presented each winter season.
Barker Mansion

styled home with 15 rooms tastefully decorated in Victorian splendor. The
Mansion is open to the public year-round and displays the typical
“turn-of-the-century” opulence with marble and rare woods and all of the
furnishings and art objects which were the personal property of the Barker
family. Mr. Barker was an early industrialist in Michigan City. |

Old Lighthouse
Museum
Phone (219) 872-1633. The Old Lighthouse, restored by the
Michigan City Historical Society, Inc., now houses a museum which portrays the
long and interesting history of Michigan City. The Old Lighthouse museum is
registered in the National Register of Historic Places.
Hesston
Steam Museum
Phone (219) 778-2783. Three gauges of steam trains give
rides around 155 wooded acres. Also, steam crane, sawmill, traction engines,
power plant and more. Free parking.
LaPorte County
Historical Society

LaPorte. The Historical Society operates a museum displaying historical items,
clothing, firearms and weapons
Door Prairie Auto
Museum
Phone (219) 326-1337. Three floors of classic automobiles,
airplanes, antique toys and historic facades spanning 100 years of automotive
history. Gift shop has something for everyone.
Great
Lakes Museum of Military History

all eras including military vehicles/armament, uniforms, photos, edged weapons,
posters, medals, firearms, research library and more.
